Dhillons Dessert

Independent Award

I am the founder and owner of Dhillon’s Desserts, a dessert shop I established at the age of sixteen. What began as a teenage dream, has grown into a thriving business. As a young entrepreneur, my role extends far beyond managing day-to-day operations. I shape the vision, drive innovation, and ensure that every aspect of the shop reflects quality, creativity, and an inspiring culture.

I am a part of the food and hospitality sector, with Dhillon’s Desserts specialising in creating high-quality desserts that are both memorable and affordable. I have worked to bring a youthful approach to the industry, shaping my business to stand out through consistency and creativity.

I grew up surrounded by business owners, so from a young age I knew I wanted something of my own. My biggest inspiration, however, has always been my dad. He encouraged me to let go of the fear of failure, teaching me without trying, I had already failed. His words gave me the confidence to start, and I truly believe that without his encouragement, I would not be where I am today.

My accomplishment of finishing my studies while managing my business is what I am proudest of. In 2020 I started my A-levels while opening Dhillon’s Desserts. Within two years I achieved three A-levels, A, A and B. I then went on to study an undergraduate degree in Finance and Investment Management at Northumbria University. In July I graduated with first class honours and awarded the Pro-Vice Chancellor’s Award in recognition of my academic achievements.

This is my proudest achievement because is proves that with determination and drive anything is possible. At times the unbearable stress made me question whether it was worth it. But that’s why I am proud of myself- not only for the results, but for the resilience it took to get there.

Over the last six years, I have shown leadership through expanding Dhillon’s Desserts into multiple locations. Taking on new stores was both exciting and challenging, but while some locations thrived, not every venture was a success. In January, I made the difficult decision to close one site due to its poor location. At the time, it felt like a personal failure, but it shaped me into a more strategic leader, unafraid to make tough decisions for the long-term success of my business.

Creativity has also been central to my business, particularly through our social media. In recent months, our unique video formats have gained millions of views, bringing national attention to our brand. It has elevated our online presence and connected us to a wider audience. For me, innovation means constantly finding new ways to engage people, whether that’s through our menu, our customer experience, or our digital footprint.

I am most proud of is the way I have been able to empower and support others through my journey. This year, I supported my younger cousin in opening her own dessert shop, JD Desserts. I guided her through every aspect of the process from training to menu development. Watching her grow in confidence and establish her own business has been incredibly rewarding. In doing this, I hope to also inspire the other girls in my family to purse their passions and knowing that I will help and guide them wherever possible.

The biggest challenge I have faced was the lack of respect I received in my early years. At 16, leading a team often older than me, many struggled to take me seriously. Balancing the need to prove to myself while still learning how to lead was one of the hardest parts of my journey. The only way I overcome this was with time and persistence. Now, my greatest fear is my proudest achievement. I lead with confidence and clarity, something I had to fight to earn, but has defined me as a business owner.

Professionally, being nominated for this award gives me credibility and validation. It shows that the hard work I put into running this company is being recognised by others. Personally, this nomination fills me with confidence, pride, and a sense of establishment. It is proof that my efforts, hardship, and struggles have not gone unnoticed- instead, they are being celebrated. For that alone, I feel honoured to be nominated.
