Shinu Yohannan
Professional Award
My professional journey began at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where I worked on advanced technologies that demanded precision, innovation, and resilience. Starting my career at such a prestigious institution gave me a strong foundation in applying science and engineering to solve real-world challenges. I later expanded my expertise through roles in Germany, gaining international experience before moving to the UK, where I now serve as
Principal Engineer at Turbo Power Systems.
At Turbo Power Systems, I specialise in power electronics for rail and energy applications, leading projects that deliver sustainable technologies to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and support the transition to cleaner energy and transport infrastructure. Over the past decade, I have been able to combine my technical expertise with my passion for sustainability, driving progress on projects that have had lasting impact across the industry.
I hold a Master of Technology in Engineering and am honoured to have achieved professional recognition as a Chartered Scientist (CSci) with the Science Council UK, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Engineering Council UK, and an International Professional Engineer (IntPE), which reflects international recognition of my competence and contributions. These designations demonstrate my commitment to professional excellence, ethical practice, and lifelong development.
What has inspired me throughout my career is the belief that engineering and science can transform industries and improve lives. From my early work at ISRO to my current role in the UK, I have been motivated by the opportunity to create innovations with real-world impact, particularly in sustainability and infrastructure.
Among my proudest achievements are the projects that have delivered energy-efficient solutions in the rail sector, where my work has directly contributed to improved system performance and reduced environmental impact. Just as meaningful is my dedication to
mentoring the next generation of engineers and scientists. Supporting young professionals in their career journeys has allowed me to empower others, share knowledge, and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.
Leadership, for me, is about more than delivering projects—it is about creating an environment where people feel valued and ideas can thrive. By encouraging creativity and inclusion, I have been able to help teams develop solutions that are both technically innovative and widely adopted across the industry.
Like many professionals working with emerging technologies, I have faced challenges in gaining acceptance for new ideas. Overcoming scepticism, navigating regulations, and proving value required persistence, clear communication, and trust-building. These experiences have strengthened my resilience and shaped me into a leader capable of delivering change in complex environments.
Being nominated for this Professional Award is an honour of deep personal and professional significance. Personally, it reflects the dedication and resilience that have defined my professional journey. Professionally, it acknowledges my contributions to advancing
sustainable technologies, supporting professional standards, and empowering others within the engineering community.
Outside of my technical role, I remain committed to broader impact. In 2025, I will take part in the Great North Run, raising funds for BBC Media Action. This reflects my belief that the values of commitment and service extend beyond the workplace into society.
Looking ahead, I remain driven by the conviction that engineering and science, when guided by innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability, can transform industries and communities.
My journey has been defined by that conviction, and it continues to inspire me to strive for excellence and meaningful impact in everything I do.
