Durham Miners
The Durham Miners' Association (DMA) stands as a beacon of solidarity, resilience, and community values, deeply rooted in trade unionism. Founded to represent the miners of Durham, the DMA today continues to champion the working class while promoting inclusion, shared heritage, and a sense of belonging.
One of its most significant contributions to community life is the annual Durham Miners’ Gala, or "The Big Meeting," which is the world’s largest celebration of trade union values. The event brings together diverse communities, trade unionists, and families, celebrating the shared victories and struggles of working people. By funding the event through the Marras (Friends of Durham Miners’ Gala), the DMA ensures this celebration remains free and accessible to all, continuing the tradition of solidarity for future generations.
Beyond celebrations, the DMA provides essential services for retired miners and their families, including compensation claims, legal advice, and tribunal representation, ensuring a caring, supportive community for those who need it most.
At the core of the DMA's inclusivity efforts is Redhills: Durham Miners Hall, a historic cultural centre dedicated to education and heritage. The DMA is committed to preserving this iconic building as a space for learning and community engagement, keeping the miners' legacy alive while inspiring future generations to pursue social justice and equality.
By bridging communities across social backgrounds and generations, the DMA ensures that the spirit of inclusivity, equality, and togetherness remains a cornerstone of its mission, preserving the proud heritage of the miners' movement.
