Show Racism the red card

We proudly nominate Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) for this prestigious inclusion award, recognising its outstanding contributions to combating racism and promoting inclusivity through education. As the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity, SRtRC has made a profound impact since its inception in January 1996, inspired by the powerful experiences of Shaka Hislop, then a Newcastle United goalkeeper.

Founded on a powerful personal experience, SRtRC was born from Shaka Hislop’s encounter with racism during the height of Newcastle United's success in the 1990s. This moment, when Hislop was subjected to racist abuse only to be met with admiration upon recognition, sparked his determination to use his influence to drive change. Harnessing the power of football and its role models, SRtRC embarked on a mission to challenge racism through education.

From its first event at Gosforth High School, where Shaka Hislop and teammate John Beresford shared their experiences, SRtRC has grown into a pivotal force in anti-racism education. The charity now engages over 50,000 individuals annually through educational workshops in schools, workplaces, and football stadiums. In 2023, SRtRC achieved the remarkable milestone of engaging over 1 million people through its programmes.

SRtRC’s impact extends beyond direct education. The charity produces a range of educational resources and platforms that address racism, challenge stereotypes, and promote positive attitudes. These resources feature prominent football players and personalities, including Harry Kane, Lauren James, Jordan Pickford, and Gareth Southgate. They are designed to support teachers and trainers in delivering impactful anti-racism education across various settings.

Operating across the UK, SRtRC has offices in North East England, North West England, Southern England (covering the South East and London), Scotland (Glasgow), and Wales (Cardiff). The charity plays a significant role in tackling racism within both professional and grassroots football in Scotland and Wales, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity in all areas of the sport.

Show Racism the Red Card’s dedication to leveraging the influence of football and its role models, combined with its extensive educational initiatives, makes it a deserving candidate for this inclusion award. Its work not only addresses racism head-on but also fosters a more inclusive society through education and positive role modelling.
