Khaled Musharraf: First Green Councillor of the City, Community Activist, and Advocate for Social Change
Khaled Musharraf, a British Bangladeshi from Elswick, is a dedicated leader in community development, political advocacy, and sustainability. He holds a MA in Philosophy and postgraduate degree in International Business and IT. Khaled made history as Newcastle’s first Green Party councillor and the first of Bangladeshi origin to achieve this position. His leadership is characterised by an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment.
Khaled currently serves as the Director of Enterprise for Urban Green Newcastle (UGN), a charity responsible for managing parks and allotments across the city. His professional career includes work as an Independent Consultant, where he gained recognition as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Consulting (FIC). His expertise encompasses social entrepreneurship, climate action, and social inclusion. Khaled was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and an alumnus of the renowned Common Purpose leadership programme, where he contributed to the Lead Bangladesh Project for the British Council. His leadership efforts earned him a place in the Common Purpose Programme for Senior Leaders Northern Powerhouse.
Khaled’s deep-rooted passion for community is reflected in his founding of various voluntary organisations across the United Kingdom, including Green Friends of Bangladesh, Muslim Greens and the Newcastle Wanderers Cricket Club (NWCC). He continues to influence local sports development as a Director on the Northumberland Cricket Board. His leadership in digital inclusion initiatives has empowered individuals from ethnic minority communities with essential digital skills, helping bridge the digital divide.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Khaled stepped up as the founding Community Champion for Newcastle, coordinating efforts to deliver essential medicines and support vaccine engagement, including mobilising vaccination buses for those in need.
Beyond his local and international community work, Khaled has been a strong advocate for charitable causes. He has actively raised funds for climate disaster relief around the world and for the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK.
Khaled's vision for change transcends borders, with efforts focused not only here in the United Kingdom but also in Bangladesh. He is driven by a mission to enhance social inclusion, promote sustainability, and unlock the potential of underrepresented communities.
